Computer Specifications Guide

Understanding Computer Specifications

Whether you're buying a new or refurbished computer, understanding the specifications is crucial to making an informed decision. This guide explains the key components and specifications you'll encounter when shopping for computers at Elecrics Computer Store.

We've designed this guide to help you understand what matters most for your specific needs and how to evaluate the various specifications when comparing different computer options.

Processor (CPU)

The processor or CPU (Central Processing Unit) is the "brain" of your computer. It handles all the instructions you give to your computer and determines how quickly your system can process data.

SpecificationWhat It MeansRecommendation
Processor BrandCommon brands include Intel and AMDBoth brands offer excellent options; choose based on performance for your needs
Processor SeriesIntel: Core i3, i5, i7, i9; AMD: Ryzen 3, 5, 7, 9Higher number = better performance (e.g., i7 is better than i5)
GenerationIntel: 10th gen, 11th gen, etc.; AMD: Ryzen 3000, 5000 series, etc.Newer generations offer better performance and efficiency
Clock SpeedMeasured in GHz (gigahertz), affects processing speedHigher is better, but compare within same generation
Number of CoresHow many processing units within the CPUBasic use: 2-4 cores; Multitasking/Professional: 6+ cores

Memory (RAM)

RAM (Random Access Memory) is your computer's short-term memory. It allows your computer to work with multiple applications simultaneously and affects overall system performance.

SpecificationWhat It MeansRecommendation
CapacityMeasured in GB (gigabytes)Basic use: 8GB
General productivity: 16GB
Power users/Gaming: 32GB+
TypeDDR3, DDR4, DDR5 (newer is better)DDR4 is standard in most current systems; DDR5 for newest models
SpeedMeasured in MHz (megahertz)Higher speeds provide better performance, especially for AMD systems

Storage

Storage is where all your files, applications, and operating system are saved. The type and size of storage affect both performance and capacity.

SpecificationWhat It MeansRecommendation
TypeHDD (Hard Disk Drive)
SSD (Solid State Drive)
NVMe SSD (faster type of SSD)
SSD strongly recommended for main drive (faster performance)
HDD acceptable for secondary storage
CapacityMeasured in GB or TB (terabytes)Minimum: 256GB SSD
Recommended: 512GB or 1TB
Large file storage: 2TB+
SpeedRead/Write speeds in MB/s (megabytes per second)HDD: 80-160 MB/s
SATA SSD: 500-600 MB/s
NVMe SSD: 2000-7000 MB/s

Graphics (GPU)

The graphics processing unit handles display output and graphics-intensive tasks like gaming, video editing, and 3D rendering.

SpecificationWhat It MeansRecommendation
TypeIntegrated (built into CPU)
Dedicated (separate GPU card)
Basic use: Integrated graphics are sufficient
Gaming/Video Editing: Dedicated graphics recommended
Brand & ModelNVIDIA GeForce or AMD Radeon are commonHigher model numbers typically indicate better performance
For NVIDIA: RTX series > GTX series
For AMD: RX 6000 series > RX 5000 series
VRAMVideo memory (measured in GB)Basic: 2-4GB
Gaming: 6-8GB
Professional: 8GB+

Display

For laptops or all-in-one computers, display specifications are important for visual comfort and productivity.

SpecificationWhat It MeansRecommendation
SizeMeasured diagonally in inchesLaptops: 13"-15" for portability, 17"+ for desktop replacement
Monitors: 24"-27" for general use, 32"+ for professional work
ResolutionNumber of pixels (e.g., 1920x1080)Minimum: Full HD (1920x1080)
Recommended: QHD (2560x1440) or 4K (3840x2160) for larger screens
Panel TypeTN, IPS, VA, OLEDIPS: Good colors, viewing angles
VA: Better contrast
OLED: Best colors and contrast
Refresh RateHow many times per second screen refreshes (Hz)Standard: 60Hz
Gaming: 144Hz or higher

Connectivity

Ports and connectivity options determine what devices you can connect and how.

SpecificationWhat It MeansRecommendation
USB PortsUSB-A: Standard ports
USB-C: Newer, smaller ports
USB 3.0/3.1/3.2: Data transfer speeds
Look for at least 1 USB-C port and multiple USB-A ports
USB 3.0 or higher for faster transfers
Video OutputsHDMI, DisplayPort, VGA, DVIHDMI or DisplayPort for modern monitors
Multiple outputs for multi-monitor setups
WirelessWi-Fi 5 (802.11ac), Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax)
Bluetooth 5.0, 5.1, etc.
Wi-Fi 6 for newest standard
Bluetooth 5.0 or higher for better wireless device support
EthernetWired network connectionGigabit Ethernet (1000 Mbps) recommended for desktops

Understanding Computer Grades

At Elecrics Computer Store, we use a grading system for our refurbished computers to help you understand the condition and cosmetic appearance of each item.

Grade A+

Like New Condition - Appears brand new or very close to new. May have been opened but shows no signs of use. No visible scratches, dents, or wear marks.

Grade A

Excellent Condition - Minor signs of use. May have very slight cosmetic imperfections that are barely noticeable. Fully functional with no issues.

Grade B

Good Condition - Shows normal signs of previous use. May have light scratches or wear marks visible upon close inspection. Fully functional with no significant issues.

Grade C

Fair Condition - Noticeable signs of use. May have visible scratches, scuffs, or minor dents. Fully functional but shows clear evidence of previous use.

Note: All computers, regardless of cosmetic grade, undergo our comprehensive testing and refurbishment process to ensure proper functionality. The grade refers only to the physical appearance and does not affect the computer's performance or reliability.

Frequently Asked Questions

What specifications matter most for everyday use?

For general tasks like web browsing, email, and office work, focus on these key specs:

  • Processor: Intel Core i5 or AMD Ryzen 5 (or better)
  • RAM: 8GB minimum, 16GB recommended
  • Storage: SSD with at least 256GB
  • Display: Full HD (1920x1080) resolution

What specifications should I prioritize for graphic design or video editing?

For creative professional work, these components are most important:

  • Processor: Intel Core i7/i9 or AMD Ryzen 7/9
  • RAM: 16GB minimum, 32GB recommended

Do refurbished computers have the same specifications as new ones?

Yes, the core specifications (processor, RAM, storage) of a refurbished computer are the same as when it was new. In many cases, we upgrade certain components like RAM or storage during the refurbishment process to meet modern performance standards.

Can I upgrade components later?

This depends on the computer model. Desktops typically offer the most upgrade potential, while laptops vary in upgradability. Most laptops allow RAM and storage upgrades, but processors and graphics cards are usually not upgradable. Ask our staff about the upgrade potential of specific models.
